Sawa Sawa = Ishinomaki + Mombasa 「Sawasawa, 石巻市 x モンバサ」

Sawa Sawa x Yappesu is the reconstruction and collaboration project created by a group of mothers from Ishinomaki (one of the areas affected by the Earthquake/Tsunami in 2011) and a group of women in Mombasa, Kenya.

Through fair trade with Africa and using traditional and cheerful Kikoi fabrics as their only material, local mums produce handmade fabric accessories like “Hakuna Matata” headbands and “Kanga” tote bags and clutches.

Kikoi is a rectangular wrap, originally worn by men and now also by women. The fabric is 100% cotton and it has several uses from skirt to tablecloth, curtains, baby-wrap and so on.  Kikoi is a symbol of the beautiful Kenya.

This project aims to reconstruct local entities in Ishinomaki city.  I saw their products in Aoyama Farmers’ Market  but you can also find Sawa Sawa HERE & HERE

I’d like to thank Sawa Sawa’s staff who kindly let me shoot their lovely accessories… ありがとうございます!!
